The Experiment

Last December, I decided to try my hand at offering a subscription. This one targeted readers, and perhaps I should have given it a bit more time to marinate, since my next books didn’t come out until mid-February and March of this year. But I learned an important lesson: while I had the time in that moment to dedicate 3-4 days to four newsletters, it wasn’t something I could sustain in the long run.

Here’s how I ran it:

  • week 1 ~ Free Fantasy Chaos News
  • week 2 ~ Snippets & Spoilers with a few extras thrown in
  • week 3 ~ Lore Library, deeper world-building, and future ideas with images
  • week 4 ~ Dragon Hoard, complete world-building with Campfire Writing link

Now, this was on top of everything else I was doing, writing Dagger, social media, blog posts, etc. I was already starting to fall behind. And then the family emergency.

It was time to reevaluate my time and energy. I’ve been home for a couple of weeks now and have already made some changes and generated some new ideas.

The New Plan

  1. Refund everyone who signed up.
  2. Remove The Isel Archives from the shop.
  3. Reformat my free newsletter and move some items to the blog.

To earn some extra cash for editing, besides attending more in-person author signing events, I have a few ideas I’m floating around. Mostly in the form of a single product. How will I create this product? I’m not sure yet, but a downloadable PDF (with links to my Campfire) of my world-building sounds interesting… if it doesn’t take up too much time, that is.

Only time will tell… and on that note, I’ll see you in the next one!
